“A story published this month in the Illinois Times said Frank Mautino received and spent campaign donations during his transition from state representative to state auditor general.
Mautino told the News Tribune his campaign coffers were depleted and he was trying to build them up in 2015. Last fall, he campaigned for re-election as representative while preparing for possible appointment as auditor general.
Once the Oct. 20 vote came, he cancelled a fundraiser scheduled for November, he said. But bills accrued from his campaign had to be managed with donations, he said. There was a lag time for donations to come and bills to be paid, Mautino said.”
