Quinn, Rauner try to create fear about the other guy during debate

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn on Thursday warned opponent Bruce Rauner would gut education and other social services, while the Republican challenger charged that Quinn is in a group of Chicago machine politicians who have led the state “down a bad path” of corruption and cronyism.

The broad themes emerged during an hour-long Illinois public television debate in Peoria that lacked much of the acrimony that is on display to voters on a daily basis through the hard-hitting, multi-million dollar negative TV ad campaigns each campaign has waged against the other. Unlike an appearance last month before the Chicago Tribune editorial board, Quinn and Rauner did not get testy with each other in front of a studio audience.
