We need an independent Legislative Inspector General.

Alisa Kaplan, RFI’s Executive Director, recently wrote a piece to The State Journal-Register amid renewed scrutiny of the Illinois’s Legislative Inspector General. Kaplan argues that Illinois’s current system fails at its most basic purpose: holding lawmakers accountable for misconduct. The system lacks accountability because the existing watchdog structure does not have sufficient independence and authority to meaningfully investigate legislators. Kaplan proposes creating an independent watchdog: a system where ethical standards are investigated and enforced, rather than a system where lawmakers fail to police themselves.
